December Mom's Night Out - Family Night at Brookside Gardens!

Take a break from the busyness of preparing for the holidays!  Join us on Monday, December 16th, at Brookside Gardens with your family to enjoy their Festival of Lights.

"Visualize close to one million twinkling colorful lights shaped in imaginative displays throughout the gardens. Enjoy illuminated giant flowers, snowflakes, a rainbow and showers, and more. Walk along the easily accessible paths and you’ll see what sets this light show apart from others; it’s the hundreds of wrapped trees and shrubs, beautifully lighted gazebos, cascading fountains, and the individually formed displays in the shapes of blooming flowers and wild animals." - Brookside Gardens website

They have a cafeteria where you can pick up something warm to drink while listening to live music - the group scheduled to play on the 16th is The Flute Dragons: Interactive Native American Flute Music.

Let's meet at 6:30pm by the cafeteria.  Admission is $20 CASH per vehicle.

See you there!

November MNO: Christmas Trees!

Friday November 22nd is our next Mom's Night Out.  This month, we will be doing a simple but fun Christmas craft - making centerpiece Christmas trees out of old paperback books!  You can find the directions we'll be using here, on Kayla Aimee's blog:

We will meet in Derwood Bible Church's old auditorium at 7:30pm.  (For those of you who were in MOPS last year, that's our old meeting space!).  We will have materials, but feel free to bring your own book(s) to use.  Cost should be around $10 per person.

Please RSVP via comment by Tuesday, November 19th, so we know how many to buy for.

Hope to see many of you there!

Registration

Name: Meaghan Trout
Husband: Eric
Kids: Alyson (5), Nathan (2), Lucy (3 months)

Hi!  My name is Meaghan Trout.  My husband, Eric, and I met at Penn State and moved down here for his job with the federal government.  We said we would move back to Pennsylvania after a few years and here we are, 13 years later!  We lived in Rockville at first and have slowly crept north to where we live now, in Damascus.  We have three beautiful children, Alyson, age 5 and Nathan, age 2 and Lucy, age 3 months.  I was an elementary school teacher and came home the day I had Alyson.  It was very lonely at first, so when I found Derwood MOPS, I was so thankful!  The first meeting I went to, a mom talked about an experience from her life and I related to her immediately...I knew I was in the right place!  This year I will be serving in the Registration role.  I tend to be a very organized, Type A personality, so you can see why I fit in that position so well. ;)  I feel very blessed to be a part of MOPS and to have met all the moms who have become my friends throughout the years.

Lisa - Hospitality

Name: Lisa Cimilluca
Husband: Sean
Kids: Grace (5 1/2)

Welcome to all of the MOPS moms!  My name is Lisa Cimilluca and this is my second year being involved with this wonderful, supportive group of women.  My husband Sean and I just celebrated our 22nd anniversary this past August 1st on a 7-day Royal Caribbean cruise!  It was the first time we had been away from our only daughter Grace for that many days.  Whew!  She survived staying with her Aunt Kelly and two cousins and we had a much-needed BLAST!

I consider myself an “older” mom for three reasons:

1.  I am 48 and have a 5½ year old daughter.  My sister is 45 and her daughter just graduated college…sigh.
2.  When I got pregnant at 42 I was put into the “Advanced Maternal Age” category.  I am sure the doctors thought they were being helpful.
3.  I can barely keep up with my very active daughter…physically and intellectually!
But as you all know, having children is a blessing from God that makes us become better women…..BRAVE women!

My husband is an officer with the NOAA Corps, which means we move every 2-3 years.  The NOAA Corps is considered the 7th and smallest service in the military/uniformed services.  Moving often makes it difficult for the three of us to cultivate friendships.   The MOPS community provides a way to immediately get “plugged in” with a group of like-minded moms who are socially active and spiritually supportive.  I feel blessed to have found this community.  I only wish I had known about it sooner.

Last year I attended Derwood MOPS and met many wonderful women.  I forged friendships with the ladies at my table and we shared many play-dates, mom’s nights out and laughs.  The meetings and gatherings left me feeling reenergized and rested and I appreciated all of the hard work the steering committee gave to make that possible for me as well as the other busy moms.  With this being my last year at MOPS (sniff), I felt the need to “give back” and wanted to be a part of the MOPS “hands and feet” providing comfort and peace, even if for only 2 hours, to moms who really need it.  I’m not sure how I am qualified in “hospitality”, but I do enjoy baking, making people feel welcome and simply nurturing those in need.  I pray that in the comings months you will also feel cared for, energized, rested and renewed. Please know that the entire steering committee is praying for the Lord to provide us with the energy, creativity and nurturing spirit that will enable us to provide those things for you.

May God bless this MOPS group and help each and every one of you
 “Be You Bravely!”

Cake Decorating

We had a fabulous meeting today with Michelle Smith.  She helped us overcome our fears of fondant and modeling chocolate.  Even though it took 12 or so MOPS moms to do what she does alone, on a regular basis, I think we all left the meeting today feeling a little more confidant in making little junior's birthday cake.

Vanessa - Discussion Group Leaders

Name: Vanessa Chacon
Husband: Justin
Kids: Ivana (6), Derek (3)

I was born in Costa Rica but at the age of 22 years old I came to the United States of America to finish my undergrad and graduate thanks to earning different kinds of scholarships.  I am married now to an outstanding man from Montana which means I will be in this country for longer time than I initially anticipated. After many struggles to conceive, God gave us the gift of two wonderful children Ivana who is 6 and Derek who is 3.  To our surprise but somehow to our knowledge of high risk, Derek was born with Down Syndrome. At first this seemed to be almost unexplainable considering that our Heavenly Father does everything "perfect"; but quickly we realized that yes indeed, He does.  In these 3 years of having the blessing to enjoy Derek's presence in our family God has shown us what pure and unconditional love is all about. He has revealed Himself to all of us by giving us hope, faith and unconditional love for others in order to continue the journey He
has set for us as individuals and as a family.

Communications

Name: Sarah Cates
Husband: Chris
Kids: Brooklyn (2), Indiana (9 months)

This is my third year in MOPS and my second year on the Steering Team! I joined MOPS as soon as I could after having my daughter to find the community and support I so wanted from other moms. As an "early bloomer" in this area (I had Brooklyn when I was 23), I was desperate to meet other moms and build relationships with them. The vast majority of my established friends were (and are) still years away from thinking about having kids! I'm so happy to have landed at Derwood and even more excited to be on the Steering Team for another year. My professional background is in public relations for non-profits, and I work from home about 40 hours a month with a San Diego based non-profit called Soldiers Who Salsa that helps members of our military recover from PTS/PTSD, TBI (traumatic brain injury) and limb loss by teaching them salsa dancing. I'm the one who will be e-mailing you all year long, and please don't be shy of reaching out to me with any questions you have as the year goes on!

When I'm not working on MOPS newsletters or fundraising for Soldiers, I like to park myself in front of the TV and watch Top Chef or The Big Bang Theory, read teen and juvenile fiction (I've read several of the Harry Potter books more than 20 times), and go to CrossFit! I also love to cook, and am constantly trying out and tweaking paleo recipes for my little grain-free, processed-food-free family.

Follow me on Instagram if you like @secates!

Table Leader

Name: Nancy Kohut
Husband: Mike
Kids: Amie (5)

Hello everyone, I'm Nancy Kohut. This year, I am grateful to have the opportunity and privilege of serving on the Steering Team as a Table Leader. I have been attending Derwood MOPS since 2011 when my daughter was just a wee toddler. My husband, Mike, and I have been married for eight years and our family lives in Rockville. We enjoy spending time in our friendly neighborhood, and in and around the city. I'm excited for our new MOPS year where we will explore how to flourish fiercely. I encourage you to be open and honest with the moms at your table and other MOPS moms to get the best experience you can out of our special time together. As always, I am looking forward to sharing, learning (and eating :) ) with you!

Kristin - Creative Activities

Name: Kristin Cooper
Husband: Dave
Kids: Jacob (7), Levi (5)

This fall marks my seventh year as a MOPS mom! I have loved every year of MOPS -- being part of the group, and for the last five years, being part of the leadership team. When my oldest son was 10 months old, my husband and I moved from our hometown to this area. It was a very lonely time for me, and I didn't know a single person living here! I had never been to MOPS before, but I knew that a lot of my friends back home were part of a MOPS group. I decided to join a local group, and was overwhelmed with joy when I realized that all of the moms had the same thoughts, feelings and insecurities that I did as a mom. God has richly blessed my time, and forged many wonderful relationships for me with my fellow moms here! For my last year as a MOPS mom, I'm joining Nancy Kohut to help lead the Creative Activities. Stay tuned for some crafty fun that doesn't involve elbow macaroni, beads, or pipe cleaners!

Table Leader

Name: Rebekah Machiela
Husband: Mitch
Kids: Simon (3), Lydia (1)

I have lived in the area for just over three years. Like many other families, we moved to the Rockville area for my husband's career. I currently work an average of about 10-15 hours per week as a social worker in a local hospital and in the community. The bit that I work makes me all the more excited for the days I get to be home and enjoy the precious moments with my growing kiddos! This is my fourth year at Derwood MOPS and my third year serving on the Steering Team. I am excited to get to know and serve moms in a more personal way this year as a Table Leader. What I love about MOPS is that it provides me an opportunity to connect with other women on a deeper level than just meeting random moms at a playground.

Joan - Mom Care

Name: Joan Furlani
Husband: Steve
Kids: {Gregory (3)}, Zachary (2)

Joan grew up in Rhode Island.  She met her husband, Steve, while attending high school thanks to a mutual friend and school's music program.  After attending the University of RI to earn a degree in music performance, she and Steve married in 2004 and moved to the Gaithersburg area the following spring.  They joined DBC shortly after moving into the area; Steve has volunteered with the youth program off and on since then and Joan has served with the worship team since 2005 as well as working on the church staff for a time.  Joan has one very active 2 year old, Zachary, as well as one boy who just had his 3rd birthday in heaven, Gregory.  She's enjoyed being a part of Derwood's MOPS group since 2011 and is looking forward to serving again as part of the Mom Care team again this year.

Expecting: Surprise!

I am the youngest of 5 girls and one of my older sisters is on a MOPS steering team in Colorado.  I also had a neighbor that just recently moved that was involved with Derwood MOPS.  Both of these women would tell me stories about MOPS and that led to me wanting to find a MOPS to join.

Last year was my first year at Derwood MOPS.  I joined halfway through the semester when a spot opened up and I was SUPER excited!  This year I was asked to join the steering team as one of the Hospitality chairs and of course I couldn't pass it up!  I am so excited for this upcoming year!

I have been involved with several hospitality type roles in the past and look forward to bringing my experience and knowledge to the steering team this year.

Rian - Coordinator

Name: Rian Ryan
Husband: Phil
Kids: Ferris, Dax, Lorelai

This will be my sixth year attending MOPS and my second year as Co-Coordinator. Prior to that I served as MOPPETS co-coordinator for 3 years. After having my first child I felt drawn to ministry geared toward other moms of young children. It's an honor to be a part of such a great group of women who are "in the trenches" with me, especially now that I have three children and rarely get to shower ;)

Kari - Mom Care

Name: Kari Allen
Husband: Michael
Kids: Isaac (4), Elise (3), Levi (1), & baby (due Jan. 2015)

My husband is a full-time USUHS DNP (Doctorate of Nurse Practitioner) student at Bethesda Naval and I am a full-time mommy. Mike and I have been married nine years, almost four of which we have spend in the USAF. We were previously stationed in San Antonio, TX where we will move back to in April 2015.

As a military wife you move quite often and last year we moved to the DC area where we knew hardly anyone. Within a month of finding our home and moving in we had a baby (Levi) and Mike started his rigorous DNP program. Needless to say we went through much transition. Yet, the ladies at the DBC MOPS group heard about our situation and embraced dour need. They rallied together and brought us many much appreciated/needed meals. I will never forget how these ladies reached out to us and helped ease our transition.

This year I have the privilege of helping with Mom Care. Ironically, one of the Mom Care responsibilities is organizing meals for moms in need :). I am so excited to be able to help facilitate care for our moms and my hope is to help moms connect with other moms through group mom's night out, play dates, and meals. It will be my first year on a MOPS steering team, but I'm looking forward to a great year! I am so thankful for MOPS as an organization and especially the ladies in the DBC group.

Robin - Coordinator

Name: Robin Purdy
Husband: Jason
Kids: Elijah (4 1/2), Kenzie (3), Addie (8 months)

I have been married to my best friend Jason for 6 years. We have been blessed with 3 crazy kids who we wildly love! This year I am excited to co-coordinate with Rian at MOPS. I was able to serve on a ST in NC several years back and ever since I joined MOPS I found a great need for moms of little ones to come together for the purpose of encouragement, support, and prayer. After moving to MD I was able to join this MOPS group at Derwood, and now I am thankful for the opportunity to invest in the women that will be joining us this year. My family has traveled extensively and lived overseas, so I have seen firsthand the great need for community that we as mothers desire but the loneliness that can often accompany these years. I believe through our past experiences the Lord has fueled in me a desire to love and care for mothers of preschoolers. This simply means pointing them to Jesus in the seemingly mundane days of our lives.
